Description

Freud was co-founded by Luis Torres, formerly the CEO of Casa de Montecristo and head of retail for Davidoff of Geneva. One of his colleagues there was “production director” Eladio Diaz. He wasn’t highlighted often by the company, but those in the know recognize his literal signature on Halfwheel’s 2014 Cigar of the Year, the Davidoff Oro Blanco. Now, he’s stepping out as the head of his venture, the Tabacalera Diaz Cabrera factory in the Dominican Republic, which started operations in January 2022.

The man knows how to roll up a lovely stogie, precisely the Freud Agape.

There are seven different Dominican leaves; each one is chosen for the subtle layer of flavor it adds to the blend. As a result, the smoke is lush. The company describes it as “creamy, and slightly spicy, with floral, cocoa, and oak wood sensations.” There’s plenty of complexity here, and we expect it only to develop thanks to the aging that’s going on. These were laid by in early 2022, so depending on when you get boxes from the first run, you’re going to experience a Freud Agape cigar that has been maturing for a little bit

As for the name, it’s primarily for the spiritual Christians and Greek philosophers among us. The Greeks differentiated between the many kinds of love we feel in life, including romantic love (eros), friendly love (philia), and committed and long-lasting love (pragma). Agape was described as the selfless, universal love we might feel for all mankind and God. It’s tricky to pin down in simple terms and has been the subject of countless treatises. If you’re in a reflective, thoughtful mood, this is the perfect cigar to toast up and do some sophisticated reading. Start with Plato if you’re feeling mainly classic.

Oh yeah – these things have a gorgeous golden wrapper on them! A perfect gift to mankind.
